San Antonio visitors have an advantage the Houston and Austin crowds don't: the drive to Round Top is almost entirely on open country highways with no urban bottlenecks. I-10 East runs flat and fast past Seguin, Luling, and Gonzales. You'll turn north at Flatonia, drive 20 miles on a two-lane road through small Fayette County towns, and arrive in La Grange — the county seat, 20 minutes from Round Top — before most show-week crowds have finished their coffee.

At roughly 137 miles and 2 hours, Round Top is a genuinely comfortable day trip from San Antonio — a full hour shorter than Dallas and comparable to Houston, but without 290's construction headaches. Leave the north side of the city by 7:30am and you're walking into Marburger Farm by 9:30am.

Coming from the south, you enter the show corridor from the Round Top end — directly into the heart of Henkel Square and the curated in-town venues. That's actually the better entry point for first-timers. Start with the concentrated, walkable downtown area (Henkel Square, the boutiques along Main Street), work your way to the larger corridor venues along TX-237, and finish in Warrenton's open fields if you have time and energy left. South-to-north is the right direction from San Antonio.

One note on Luling: if you're leaving San Antonio early, City Market BBQ opens at 7am and is legitimately one of the best brisket operations in Texas. It's right off I-10 at mile marker 60. Stopping for a takeout order to eat in the parking lot is a local tradition among the San Antonio-to-Round Top crowd. Don't skip it on a show-week morning.

The San Antonio Day Trip Itinerary

7:00 AM

Leave San Antonio

Head east on I-10. Stop at City Market in Luling (~60 miles) for brisket — opens at 7am, one of the best in Texas.

9:00–9:30 AM

Arrive in Round Top

Park near Henkel Square. Grab coffee and pie at Royer's Pie Haven (opens 10am most days, 8am Saturdays). Walk the in-town boutiques before the show crowds arrive.

10:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Shop the show — south end first

Coming from the south, start with the in-town venues: Henkel Square Market, Marburger Farm. These reward the early crowd with first pick of inventory.

12:30 PM

Lunch

Royer's Round Top Café if you reserved. Food trucks at Marburger Farm or The Arbors if not. Plan 45–60 minutes.

1:30 – 4:00 PM

North end venues

The Arbors, Blue Hills, and Warrenton fields if your energy holds. Warrenton is the best deal-hunting on the corridor.

4:30 PM

Head home

Reverse the I-10 route. Back in San Antonio by 6:30–7pm. Stop in Seguin for gas and a final snack.

This is a full day, not a leisurely one. If you want breathing room — a proper dinner at Royer's Café, a winery stop, or more than 2 venues — plan an overnight. Show-week lodging books fast →

Worth a Stop on the Drive

City Market — Luling

~60 miles from SA

One of the great Texas BBQ institutions. Brisket, sausage, ribs — low-frills, high-quality, and right off I-10. Opens at 7am. Carry-out bags are a tradition for the drive east.

Gonzales

~80 miles via US-183

The 'Come and Take It' town — where Texans first fired on Mexican troops in 1835. A 15-minute detour worth it for history buffs. The Gonzales Memorial Museum is small but well-done.

La Grange

~115 miles, 20 min from Round Top

Fayette County seat with a beautiful courthouse square. Kolache bakeries, local diners, and a genuine small-Texas-town feel. Stop on the way in or out — it's directly on the route.

Royer's Pie Haven — Round Top

In Round Top

Opens 8am Saturdays, 10am most other days. Same pies as Royer's Café next door — world-famous for good reason. The morning slice under the oak trees is the best start to a show day.

Festival Hill — Round Top

In Round Top

A world-class music institute and concert hall built in the Texas countryside. The grounds are open for walking and photography. Concerts run throughout the year — check the schedule before you go.

Saddlehorn Winery

~5 min from Round Top

A small winery just outside of town with Hill Country views. A good final stop before the drive home — tasting flights, a relaxed outdoor space, and a natural wind-down from a full show day.

Where to Start When You Arrive

During Show Week

San Antonio visitors arrive from the south, which puts Round Top proper as your first stop — Henkel Square, the in-town boutiques, and the south end of TX-237. This is actually ideal for first-timers: start with the most concentrated, walkable area before committing to the sprawling corridor. From there, head north through Marburger Farm and The Arbors. If you have a full day, push to Warrenton's open fields in the afternoon — that's where the serious deal-hunting happens, and the crowds thin out as you move north.

Between Shows (Year-Round)

Off-season Round Top is a legitimately different experience. Fewer than 20% of the vendors are present, but the ones who are have time to talk and prices are more flexible. The boutiques on Henkel Square stay open, Royer's Café runs its full weekly schedule, and Festival Hill's concert calendar continues throughout the year. For San Antonio visitors who want a peaceful Texas countryside day without antique-show chaos, the off-season trip is often the better one.

What to Budget

Gas (round trip)

$30–45

Show admission

$0–30/day

Lunch + pie

$20–50

Lodging (if staying)
